Google announced a new image format called WebP a couple of days ago, which is claimed to be able to reduce image sizes by something like 40%. Acceptance and adoption is likely to be difficult, of course, but Google will also almost certainly add support for it to Chrome. Considering the 7% market share Chrome has captured, I don’t imagine Firefox, Safari, and Opera will be far behind. Internet Explorer might find some time to do it once they recover from the bashing they received on reddit.

Anyway, if you’d like to dig a little deeper into the format, this article provides an excellent, in-depth analysis.
