Firesheep / Idiocy

October 27, 2010 § Leave a comment

Firesheep is a new Firefox extension which allows you to hijack another users browser session if they’re running on the same unencrypted network as you. Eric Butler developed this extension, and has this to say about it:

Websites have a responsibility to protect the people who depend on their services. They’ve been ignoring this responsibility for too long, and it’s time for everyone to demand a more secure web. My hope is that Firesheep will help the users win.

I much prefer Jonty Wareing’s approach. He developed Idiocy, which is another new Firefox extension that does something similar to Firesheep. Instead of hijacking their session, it warns the user that you could hijack their session.

Brilliant.
